As I previously articulated, while it is imperative to remain vigilant against pressures exerted by the Chinese, Hong Kong, and British governments, we must equally be wary of the dissenting voices that may arise from our fellow compatriots in Hong Kong.

Predictably, shortly after the inauguration of this crowdfunding campaign, other Hong Kong organizations began to follow suit, almost as if they were mere shadows. Perhaps my concerns are excessive, but even some well-intentioned organizations have expressed confusion regarding this phenomenon. The role of news media should primarily be to encourage public engagement with their own content, rather than resorting to crowdfunding efforts. From a business standpoint, if a news platform seeks to expand its offerings, there exists no necessity for fundraising through such means. I genuinely fail to discern any pressing need for the immediate implementation of these plans. Nevertheless, I conveyed to my team that such matters are of little consequence; what truly matters is that our friendly organizations comprehend the essence of our actions. Indeed, actions speak louder than words.

What is even more amusing is the emergence of comments asserting, “Raising over £10,000 in merely two days is remarkably swift for our community. Some suspect that early donations were orchestrated to enhance credibility.” Perhaps those who profess to represent the interests of Hong Kong have not fully grasped the profound significance of BNO equality within the psyche of Hongkongers.

The true essence of equality transcends the mere aspiration for a complete nationality passport; it embodies a profound call for historical justice. As I have previously noted, during the Sino-British negotiations, the voices of Hongkongers were conspicuously absent, rendering them powerless in determining their own destinies. Even today, we remain largely in the dark regarding the motivations behind Britain’s repeated concessions to China. It is only through the persistent efforts and earnest appeals of our community that we may compel the British government to confront its historical missteps and render justice to the people of Hong Kong.

Why have I chosen this moment to take action? Because I have long awaited an opportune time—specifically, when the British government exhibits vulnerabilities in its handling of Hong Kong affairs. Over the past twenty-eight years, the British government has consistently maintained that “One Country, Two Systems” is functioning effectively. However, it was only following the enactment of the National Security Law in 2020 that they acknowledged the futility of self-deception and accepted accountability for their historical signing of a joint declaration that inadequately safeguarded the rights of Hong Kong civilians. Consequently, they introduced the BNO visa. With the continued relaxation of the BNO visa policy, we initially found ourselves devoid of an opportunity to advocate for equality. It was not until the Labour government proposed amendments to the extradition treaty concerning Hong Kong that the British government once again endeavoured to sell out the interests of the Hong Kong populace. This moment represents an ideal opportunity for us to remind the British government to confront its historical actions, tracing back to the origins of Hong Kong’s handover.

Why have I opted to pursue equality through legal avenues? The reason is simple: the law is my area of expertise. Every element of existence possesses its designated role, and every individual has unique strengths. If we aspire to enhance the world, we must dedicate ourselves to areas in which we excel, allowing us to achieve greater results with less effort. While I may not engage in street protests—not due to a lack of support, but rather a recognition of my limitations—I firmly believe that every individual has their own contributions to make. Although I adhere to Buddhist principles, I find it fitting to borrow a sentiment from Catholicism: the Creator has fashioned humanity in such a way that each person is unique, a complexity that remains elusive even to scientists. This illustrates the Creator’s magnificence, enabling us to complement one another’s strengths and weaknesses.

Certain Hong Kong organizations claim their responsibility lies in filtering information for Hongkongers in the UK. Yet, there are also representatives from these organizations who have candidly expressed that the complexities surrounding equality, laden with historical implications, are beyond their full comprehension, leading to hesitance in offering support. If you cannot fully grasp these nuances, how can you assume the responsibility of filtering information for others?

Additionally, numerous individuals have demanded comprehensive outlines of our litigation strategies and legal justifications, asserting they have perused all my writings yet remain unaware of my depth of understanding regarding the BNO issue. Such individuals are often unclear about the five areas of advocacy I have delineated. Following my explanations, they assert that without the direct conversion of BNO to British citizenship, equality cannot be claimed. I have repeatedly emphasized the meaning of equality, and it appears they either refuse to understand or are simply unable to do so. Nevertheless, I have reassured my team that this is inconsequential; we cannot compel everyone to align with our views. This encapsulates the essence of democracy and the principles underpinning capital markets.

Moreover, some organizations have suggested, “If a team of reputable lawyers had been assembled prior to launching the public fundraising campaign, it might have enhanced the campaign’s credibility and reassurance.” I must candidly convey that this is a matter concerning the people of Hong Kong; thus, I am willing to offer my assistance pro bono, as I too am a Hongkonger. However, this is not a concern for individuals of other nationalities; they will not provide legal services without compensation. Even with adequate funding, the number of individuals genuinely interested in this issue remains scant, rendering it challenging to capture the attention of the local legal community. The prompt response from Paul Harris SC can be attributed to his prior residency in Hong Kong, granting him a level of understanding and concern for the territory. For those who pose such inquiries, it is time to reassess your perspective; the world does not revolve around you. When we lack the power to advocate for ourselves, how can we expect the local legal community to agree to represent a group of Hongkongers who possess neither funds nor trustworthiness? It is time for you to mature, broaden your horizons, and expand your perspectives.

At present, we have received a response from the Home Office regarding the application for British citizenship from a Hongkonger who previously held a BDTC passport. In addition to Paul Harris SC, two international law barristers are currently deliberating their potential involvement, and we await the professional insights of our legal team.

Chinese version : BNO 平權之路：內外兼顧，方能致遠

眾籌Link ： https://gofund.me/042d7e3c

Related articles:

(Latest Update) BNO Equality Campaign – A Crowdfunded Legal Fight for Justice

Let Us Remind the Labour Party of the True Meaning of the Sino-British Joint Declaration

Hong Kong’s Fate: A Story of Broken Promises and a Fight for Future

Hong Kongers’ Quest for Equity in the UK: A Path Started Through Inquiry and Independent Thinking

BNO Equality Advocacy – Frequently Asked Questions on Achieving Rights & Justice

The Path to BNO Equality: Navigating the Challenges of Public Quality

📢 Join the “UK Life & Current Affairs Channel” (DOVC.co.uk) Community! 🇬🇧

👋 Want to stay up-to-date on the latest UK life information, news, current affairs, policy changes, or share experiences with fellow Brits?
