The selected venue, Ramen Hassaku, situated at 42 Derby Rd, Stapleford, Nottingham NG9 7AA, transcends the mere provision of authentic Japanese cuisine. The proprietors of the restaurant are deeply committed to community engagement and assert that the “One-on-One Mentorship Scheme” presents an exceptional opportunity. “We hope that through this exchange, more local people will recognize the efforts of Hong Kong immigrants to integrate into society,” they articulated, conveying their aspiration that the evening will highlight the diligence and dedication of Hongkongers endeavouring to assimilate into Nottingham’s community.

In an effort to infuse additional local character into the event, Hongkong Notts will collaborate with the Descendants of Victoria City to guarantee the success of the Nottingham event. Hongkong Notts, a community organisation committed to assisting Hongkongers residing in the Nottingham vicinity, will play a crucial role in connecting participants and offering continual support.

Christy, the co-founder of Hongkong Notts CIC, articulates the significance of this collaboration: “Historically, Hongkongers who immigrated to nations such as the United States and Canada often remained within the confines of Chinatown communities. However, our current objective is to foster true integration. Therefore, we actively engage with local councils and organizations to join forces on various projects. Our aim is to create events that not only involve Hongkongers but also encompass local residents. Previously, we aspired to implement initiatives akin to the ‘One-on-One Mentorship Scheme’ from Descendants of Victoria City, but regrettably, we faced challenges due to limited funding. We deeply appreciate the programs that local councils and organizations proactively propose to us, although we are also mindful of our manpower constraints. With this new opportunity, we are determined to embrace it and facilitate authentic integration, transcending the boundaries of our comfort zone. While ‘圍爐’ (gathering within our own community) is crucial, as it aligns with our familiarity with Cantonese culture, we are equally eager to immerse ourselves within the broader British community.”

Why This Matters

In an increasingly divided world, initiatives such as the “One-on-One Mentorship Scheme” hold greater significance than ever before. By facilitating a relaxed and informal atmosphere for meaningful discussions, Descendants of Victoria City is contributing to the establishment of connections between cultures and enhancing a sense of belonging for all individuals.
