Recently, a substantial number of advertisements featuring the term “unification” prominently displayed in red and white have gained significant traction on Chinese social media platforms, particularly within the Beijing airport terminal. Notably, these advertisements incorporate a covert map of Taiwan, eliciting considerable enthusiasm among nationalistic netizens.

Videos disseminated across Chinese social media platforms indicate that, since early April of the current year, travelers have observed a complete row of lightboxes within Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport. These lightboxes do not present a variety of commercial advertisements; rather, they prominently display a series of advertisements featuring the term “unification” rendered in red against a white background. The character “统一” (unification) has been modified to include the shape of the island of Taiwan in yellow positioned adjacent to it. Furthermore, beneath these two characters, the slogan “Defend national sovereignty, uphold national unification” is presented.

Upon scrutiny by Chinese netizens, it was ascertained that the advertising campaign was initiated by one of China’s prominent official media outlets, the People’s Daily. According to the official website of the People’s Daily, the advertisement was initially published on April 1 through their official Weibo account, coinciding with the date when the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army executed joint military exercises in proximity to Taiwan. The accompanying message asserted, “China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are inviolable and indivisible, and the People’s Liberation Army possesses the determination and capability to defend national sovereignty.”

Numerous nationalistic netizens have posited that the substantial publicity initiatives undertaken by the People’s Daily must hold a particular objective, leading to comments in eager anticipation of whether the Chinese government is preparing for a formal incursion into Taiwan. The esteemed Chinese media figure Lu Guoping, subsequent to sharing pertinent photographs, enthusiastically articulated his forecasts: “Significant actions are imminent! All advertisement billboards at Beijing Capital International Airport have been altered to read ‘National Unification’! It is likely that this will occur soon! I fervently hope for the country’s advancement and the achievement of complete unification in the near future!”

However, certain rational individuals within the Chinese online community, in an effort to circumvent “speech censorship,” have sarcastically highlighted that the government is, once again, diverting public attention from the nation’s economic decline while simultaneously presenting prior reports concerning the substantial withdrawal of foreign investment, which has significantly affected China’s economy. The comments included, “Slogans are effective; I have already achieved my financial success,” “Businesses are refraining from advertising; an empty display is not favourable,” “I initially perceived it as a new advertisement for unification instant noodles,” and “Given the economic downturn, could this be a strategy to deflect social tensions?”

In an effort to redirect public focus from prevailing domestic economic challenges and alarmingly high youth unemployment rates in China, the government is accused of intentionally manipulating “national patriotism.” This has involved the exacerbation of issues such as military unification, regional aggression, and the disparagement of other nations, all of which serve to capture the attention of the Chinese populace.
