Paris — French President Emmanuel Macron is once again facing a constitutional crisis after the National Assembly passed a no-confidence motion against the prime minister, forcing him to resign. This marks the fourth prime minister to step down in the past two years.
Amid mounting economic and debt pressures, senior French officials told this outlet that Macron cannot avoid responsibility. Having served as president for more than eight years and, before that, as France’s economy minister for two years, Macron has overseen the nation’s economic affairs for over a decade. Yet, France’s financial problems have only deepened.
Critics point to Macron’s unpopular decision to raise the retirement age and argue that worsening domestic tensions over immigration and refugees have further destabilized the country. They contend that the prime minister has become little more than a scapegoat for the president’s failings.
Analysts warn that France could soon see a wave of large-scale demonstrations and unrest in response to the government’s political and economic turmoil.
