UK Conservative Leader Urges Starmer to Work With Tories Amid Economic Crisis

London — Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to seek cross-party cooperation with the Conservatives before the UK economy deteriorates further.

Speaking at a special economic conference hosted at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in central London, Badenoch outlined her party’s position as the main opposition. She warned that the UK is heading into an economic crisis and accused the Labour government of repeatedly breaking its election pledges.

Badenoch said the Chancellor and his advisers are preparing an autumn budget that will raise taxes “in as many areas as possible” to shore up the government’s finances.

She also mocked the Labour government’s recent cabinet reshuffle and the tax scandal involving former Housing Secretary Angela Rayner, who resigned last week. Citing official figures, Badenoch noted that more than 3,000 new health-related benefit claims are filed in the UK every day. She stressed that the Conservatives are the only party opposed to expanding welfare spending, arguing that Labour’s policies — alongside restrictive tax measures on businesses — are fueling high unemployment, layoffs, and company closures.

Concluding her remarks, Badenoch issued a direct appeal to Starmer, saying that if Labour faces an internal crisis of confidence, it should seek cooperation with the Conservatives to prevent Britain from sliding deeper into economic turmoil.

Reporters also pressed Badenoch on speculation that she herself could face a leadership challenge, with some suggesting she has a “50–50 chance” of being subjected to a no-confidence motion. She declined to respond. However, sources told this outlet that at least three Conservative MPs have already begun preparations to challenge her position via the party’s influential 1922 Committee, with a potential showdown timed around the Conservative Party conference in Manchester in early October.

Badenoch may therefore be facing not only a battle with the government, but also a fight for her own political survival.
