First Case Since Hong Kong’s Return UK MP Denied Entry While Visiting Grandson, Igniting Diplomatic Fury Between China and the UK

Wera Hobhouse, a Member of Parliament for the British Liberal Democrats, recently journeyed to Hong Kong to visit her son and newly born grandson. However, upon her arrival at Hong Kong International Airport, she was subjected to questioning by security personnel. Without any explanation provided, she was denied entry and promptly returned to the United Kingdom, eliciting a significant backlash within British political circles.

According to reports from international media, Ms. Hobhouse indicated that upon her arrival in Hong Kong, she was detained at the airport and was immediately scheduled to board the next return flight to the United Kingdom, without being provided any specific reasons for her denial of entry. Her husband was permitted to enter; however, he opted to accompany her on her return. Ms. Hobhouse expressed her shock and profound sadness, stating, “I am shocked and extremely saddened. I simply wished to embrace my grandson, but I was unjustly deprived of that right without any explanation. It is truly inhumane.” She further noted that she is the first British Member of Parliament to be denied entry into Hong Kong since 1997.

This incident rapidly escalated into a diplomatic controversy. The United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, articulated his concern regarding the situation, indicating that he had urgently sought clarifications from the authorities of Hong Kong and Beijing. He underscored that “the refusal of a Member of Parliament entry during a private visit is concerning,” and further noted that such actions would only exacerbate Hong Kong’s international reputation. Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, characterised the incident as “heartbreaking” and “completely unacceptable,” and he has formally communicated with the Foreign Secretary requesting a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom. He believes that the denial of entry to Hobhouse was primarily attributable to her status as a Member of Parliament, asserting, “This is a suppression of democratic representation.”

Hobhouse serves as a member of the “Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China” (IPAC), an organisation that systematically evaluates China’s human rights record and brings together over 40 parliamentarians from diverse nations. She emphasised that this experience was not solely directed at her but represented a “humiliation” for all parliamentarians. Furthermore, she expresses her hope that the United Kingdom government will formally issue a robust protest against China.

Mr. Phil Brickell, a distinguished member of the Labour Party’s Foreign Affairs Committee, articulated his discontent by emphasising that “the denial of entry to a British Member of Parliament without the provision of any justifications is entirely unacceptable.” He further implored the Foreign Office to regard this matter as an urgent diplomatic incident.

Previous reports have indicated that Beijing imposed sanctions on five British Members of Parliament who expressed criticism towards the Chinese Communist Party in 2021. This incident may once again prompt inquiries regarding the status of Sino-British relations. The Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom has been requested to provide a response concerning this matter.
