Ms. Ho’s decision to support the mentorship scheme is profoundly rooted in her personal experiences. Having immigrated to the United Kingdom from Hong Kong at the age of eighteen, she has dedicated the past twenty-six years to navigating and integrating into British society.

“Since immigrating to the UK at the age of eighteen, twenty-six years have passed in the blink of an eye,” Ms. Ho articulates. “Reflecting on my journey, I arrived in a foreign land alone to pursue my studies and career, gradually adapting to the diverse cultures and lifestyles within British society, while encountering numerous challenges and experiencing personal growth along the way. As someone who has ‘been there, done that,’ I have also witnessed the Hong Kong community transition to the UK across various periods, along with their unique stories and struggles.”

Her experiences have fostered a deep passion for supporting the next generation of Hongkongers as they embark on their own journeys of integration.

“In engaging with the new generation of Hongkongers arriving in the UK today, I hold myriad sentiments and aspire to share some insights and recommendations,” Ms. Ho adds. She observes the adaptability, resourcefulness, and communal spirit that are characteristic of these new arrivals. Nevertheless, she also recognises the ongoing challenges, underscoring the significance of actively comprehending and respecting British culture, embracing communication despite linguistic barriers, and participating in local community activities.

“Maintaining a mindset of learning and exploration, and willingly accepting new experiences, is the only path to truly establishing a sense of belonging,” she concludes, imparting words of encouragement and wisdom.
