US Hikes Tariffs on Chinese Goods to 245%; China Says Move is “Completely Irrational”

A representative of the Ministry of Commerce affirmed that China has consistently reiterated its stance regarding the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the United States. China will dismiss what it perceives as an inconsequential numerical manipulation of tariffs by the United States. Nevertheless, should the United States persist in its substantial infringement upon China’s rights and interests, China will resolutely respond with countermeasures and remain steadfast in its commitment to address the situation comprehensively.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’ s Republic of China also stated earlier on April 16 that “there are no winners in a tariff war or a trade war. China does not want to fight, but it is definitely not afraid to fight.” Japanese officials are set to travel to the United States for tariff negotiations. President Trump has declared, ” I will personally participate in the tariff war ” while others inquire, ” Is it still necessary to discover Trump’ s behind- the- scenes’ grand strategy”? “ The less discussed realities of the tariff war have come to light as members of Trump’ s party were reported to have “sold national debt and bought stocks” prior to the significant rise in the stock market last week. Tariffs imposed by Trump have led the United States to take the lead in expressing 72, 000 popular articles. For further details, view at 01: 22. In the context of the Trump Trade War, Chinese tariffs on syringes exceed 245%, while lithium batteries are subjected to tariffs of 173%. One category of goods currently bears no tariffs. In related news, China has scanned 2. 4 million tons of Brazilian soybeans, and US farmers are imploring President Trump to engage in negotiations with China. President Biden criticised Trump during his first public speech after leaving office; the White House responded by suggesting, ” Thought he was asleep early. ” China is suspected of requiring domestic airlines to halt the reception of Boeing aircraft. President Trump has admonished Beijing for purportedly violating the agreement. The tariff war continues as the White House reiterates that Beijing must reach a trade agreement with the United States, asserting that “the ball is in China’ s court.” Additionally, two Chinese citizens were shot dead in Rome, with a suspected Chinese business gang seizing territory. The Chinese Embassy has urged a prompt resolution to this matter. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Trump Administration intends to leverage tariff negotiations to compel over 70 countries to restrict trade with China. Furthermore, South Korea has announced a ban on certain items deemed essential for Hong Kong tourists from entering the country starting in April. Violation of this ban may lead to legal repercussions.

On April 16, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a response regarding the United States’ increase of tariffs on China to 245%, stating, “You can ask the US side for the specific tariff rates.” Lin Jian reiterated, “There are no winners in a tariff war or a trade war. China does not want to fight, but it is definitely not afraid to fight.”

Based on prior reports, on April 10, 2025, the United States government declared an increase in the tariff rate for “reciprocal tariffs” applied to Chinese goods exported to the United States, raising it to 125%. Subsequently, on April 11, the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Finance disseminated the announcement issued by the Tariff Commission of the State Council regarding the adjustment of measures for imposing additional tariffs on imported goods originating from the United States. The announcement emphasized that, irrespective of the Udnited States’ continues imposition of elevated tariffs, such actions will lack any economic significance and will ultimately be regarded as a joke in the annals of world economic history. At the present tariff levels, there exists no possibility of market acceptance for goods exported from the United States to China. Should the United States persist in this numerical manipulation of tariffs, China will disregard such measures. Furthermore, if the United States continues to substantially infringe upon China’s interests, China will firmly retaliate and remain steadfast in its resolve until the matter is conclusively addressed.
